It’s OK to be nervous when trying something new

The Boy Who Feared the Ice began when Edwin was feeling nervous about hockey and started listing all of his fears. What started as a book just for our family became a way to help him work through those worries. When he asked if it might help other kids too, we decided to publish it as a fun family project.

Then we met Chris from Kiss FM, and everything changed. What started with a feature on Kiss FM last year led to an appearance on CTV Morning Live and eventually to Edwin sharing his story with the Ottawa Senators.

Since then, he has written other books with the goal of helping kids face their worries and reminding them that they are not alone.

He even used his story to help raise money for the Ottawa Senators Foundation, selling his book on Jan 13, 2026!

The story of

Edwin Villemaire

Edwin’s story began in Timbits hockey, where his first year felt safe and fun with Dad coaching beside him. But the next season brought new coaches, new teammates, and a lot of uncertainty. Suddenly, the rink felt big and overwhelming, and Edwin was full of “what if” worries. He didn’t want to go to each practice station unless Mom walked around the rink to watch him through the glass.

After trying different ways to manage the anxiety, Edwin’s parents suggested he write his worries down. He dictated every thought from serious fears to silly scenarios while Dad typed and Mom helped him work through each one. That list soon grew into a story.

When Edwin asked to turn it into a book to help other kids facing similar fears, the answer was yes. The result is The Boy Who Feared the Ice – a warm, encouraging reminder that even the biggest “what ifs” can be faced one brave step at a time.

Since sharing his story Edwin has been featured in the media, and even dropped the puck with Daniel Alfredsson at an Ottawa Senators game! He has even gone to write additional books.

Super cute and fun book with a real life lesson as well. It has a great flow to it and is a fun read. My boys ask to read it all the time. They love it. I love that it shows how we can talk through our fears and still face them!
